Karate is a Japanese martial art. What is the word “Karate” origin? “Kara” means “empty,” and “te” means “hand.” Together, the term “karate” refers to the art of fighting hand to hand without weapons.
Boxing is a combat sport that involves fighting with fists. Traditionally, boxing has also been referred to as “pugilism,” which literally means, “fist fight.” Fights take place in an area called a “ring,” and consist of timed rounds. Winners are decided by points or by knocking out an opponent. A referee runs the fight inside the ring while judges outside the ring ultimately decide who wins the match.
Kickboxing combines the punches of boxing with the kicks of karate. There are a few variations of the sport. Some competitive kickboxers practice the sport against opponents in the ring. Other fitness enthusiasts practice kickboxing as an aerobic workout. Kickboxing techniques are also practical for self defense. Over the past several decades, kickboxing has become an exciting sport to watch and to practice.
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is a combat sport, which allows both striking (punching, kicking, elbows) and grappling (wrestling), while both standing and on the ground. MMA uses techniques from various forms of combat and martial arts and was heard of as MMA for the first time during the review of UFC 1.
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art. What does taekwondo mean? The word “taekwondo” (sometimes seen as, “tae kwon do”) consists of three parts: “tae,” meaning foot, “kwon,” meaning fist or hand, and “do,” meaning way of life. All together, taekwondo literally means, “foot and fist way of life.” This is an apt description because not only does taekwondo focus on kicking and punching techniques, but also on character development. These aspects of taekwondo have roots in Korea’s ancient history.

Step aerobics is a choreographed routine of stepping up and down on a rectangular, square, or circular platform (or, in the case of BOSU, a domed, flexible apparatus). Many classes combine step aerobics with body sculpting, jumping rope, sliding, or funk aerobics.
Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in ancient India. First codified by the sage Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras around 400 C.E, the practice was in fact handed down from teacher to student long before this text arose. Traditionally, this was a one-to-one transmission, but since yoga became popular in the West in the 20th century, group classes have become the norm.
